Heavenly Father, I come to You today acknowledging that I am a sinner. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son, that He died on the cross for my sins, and that You raised Him from the dead on the third day.

I repent of my sins and I turn away from my old life. I ask You, Lord Jesus, to come into my heart right now. Be my Lord and my Saviour. Forgive me of all my sins and cleanse me with Your precious blood.

I confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord. I believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead. Thank You, Father, for saving me. Fill me now with Your Holy Spirit and help me to live for You all the days of my life.

Based on the teaching notes "Explaining Water Baptism" by Ama Patience Sarpong. Explore the path to faith, the meaning of baptism, and prepare for your walk with Christ.

Stepping Stone 1

Confronted with the Truth

Before anyone can believe, they must first be confronted with the objective truth about Jesus Christ and the truth about themselves.

✝️ The Truth About Jesus Christ

  • His Life: Jesus was more than a man; He was the Son of God, the promised Messiah. "Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through Him..." (Acts 2:22)
  • His Death: His crucifixion was no accident, but part of God's set purpose and foreknowledge for our salvation. (Acts 2:23)
  • His Resurrection: Death could not keep its hold on Him; God raised Him to life and He is alive today. (Acts 2:24)
  • His Exaltation: He is exalted to the right hand of God, and everyone will eventually know that He is Lord. (Acts 2:33-35)

⚠️ The Truth About Ourselves

  • We are Sinners: We are part of the sinful human race. God's verdict is clear: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23, 3:10-12)
  • We must Repent: To be forgiven and receive the Holy Spirit, we must turn around. "Repent and be baptized, every one of you... so that your sins may be forgiven." (Acts 2:38, Luke 13:3)
  • We must Call: We must cry out for salvation. "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Acts 2:21)
  • We must be Baptized: As Peter commanded, to show our past is buried and our new life has begun. (Acts 2:38)
Stepping Stone 2

Convicted by the Truth

Confrontation with the truth leads directly to a stir in the conscience.

When Peter's listeners heard the truth about Jesus and themselves, "they were cut to the heart" (Acts 2:37). The message went to their consciences like an arrow to its mark. The truth hit home.

"When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, 'Brothers, what shall we do?'" — Acts 2:37

The Alarm Clock of Conscience: Conviction of sin is like an alarm clock which rings in our conscience until we rise from our sleepy state. We may try to send our conscience back to sleep or silence its inner voice, but we shall not know God's forgiveness and peace until we face our responsibilities before Him.

Concerned about the Truth

A convicted conscience leads to an anxious enquiry: "What shall we do?"

Peter's listeners did not just feel bad; they wanted action. Their cry was full of concern. They asked the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"

Turning to the Great Physician: Those who know they are sick consult a doctor. Similarly, those who know they have sinned against God must turn to Jesus Christ, the Savior and Great Physician.

"Jesus said to them, 'It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.'" — Luke 5:31-32
Stepping Stone 4

Converted to Jesus Christ

Conversion is the turning point where faith and repentance meet, leading to the receipt of the Holy Spirit.

🔄 Repentance

Repentance means to have a change of mind that leads to a change of direction—turning from sin to God. It is like the military command: "Halt, about turn, quick march." It means leaving the broad road that leads to destruction. It is more than saying sorry; it is a changed life. (Matthew 7:13-14)

📞 Calling & Receiving

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. We must receive Him. "Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." (John 1:12). Believing and receiving are two key words: we believe the truth, then receive Him to take control.

🔥 The Gift of the Holy Spirit

Peter promised that those who repented would "receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38). Trying to live the Christian life without the Holy Spirit is like trying to drive a car with an empty fuel tank. God gives us the Holy Spirit to:

  • Give us the **inward assurance** that we are His children: "The Spirit himself testifies... we are God's children" (Rom. 8:15-16).
  • Help us **understand the Bible**: The Holy Spirit interprets and teaches us (John 14:26, 16:13).
  • Make us **bold in our witness**: "They were all filled... and spoke the word of God boldly" (Acts 4:31).
Stepping Stone 5

Confessing Jesus Christ

We must not remain secret disciples. Having become Christians, we must boldly declare our allegiance to Him.

1. By Our Lips

"If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord', and believe in your heart... you will be saved." (Romans 10:9-10). Use your lips to tell others what He has done.

2. By Our Lives

"Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ." (Philippians 1:27). A changed life is a bright light in a dark world.

3. By Water Baptism

Baptism is described as 'an outward sign of an inward faith.' It is like putting on the uniform of the Master's colors to show whose army we belong to. (Acts 22:16)

'Ashamed to be a Christian! Afraid the world should know I'm on the way to Heaven Where joys eternal flow! Afraid to wear Thy colours, Or blush to follow Thee! Forbid it, O my Saviour, That I should ever be.'

Stepping Stone 6

Continuing with Jesus Christ

Conversion is only the beginning. The new converts did not stand still; they immediately entered the active fellowship of the church.

📚 The Apostles' Teaching

Devote yourself to the Bible. Read it regularly each day for spiritual food. Interpret it prayerfully with the Holy Spirit's guide. Obey it continually, put it into practice. (John 8:31)

🤝 Christian Fellowship

Fellowship means 'to have a share in something with someone.' We need fellowship with Christ and with others (like spokes in a wheel). "Let us not give up meeting together..." (Hebrews 10:25)

🍞 Breaking of Bread

The Lord's Supper is a direct command. Bread and wine are pictures of His body and blood, instituted in the upper room to keep His sacrifice fresh in our minds. (1 Cor. 11:23-32)

🙏 Prayers

Maintain communication with God. Engage in **Private Prayer** (closet prayer, Mark 1:35) and **Public Prayer** (gathering in prayer meetings, which are the heating system of the church, Acts 12:12).

What Does Baptism Mean?

Water baptism is an essential step of dedication, sealing a covenant and identifying the believer with Christ.

1. The Meaning of the Word ("Baptizo")

In Greek, the word 'baptizo' means to submerge, dip, plunge, or douse. It refers to total contact. For example, dipping a cup to fill it, or a piece of cloth into a vat of dye. Sprinkling or pouring hides this original, rich visual meaning of immersion.

2. The Practice of the Jews & John

Jews used immersion when Gentiles converted to Judaism to represent their past being forgotten. John the Baptist adapted this, preaching repentance and immersing people in Jordan. He baptized in Aenon because "there was plenty of water" (John 3:23).

3. The Baptism of Jesus Christ

Jesus had no sin, but was baptized to "fulfill all righteousness"—identifying with sinners. His going down pointed to His death, His immersion to His burial, and His coming up out of the water was a picture of His resurrection and ascension.

4. The Practice of the Early Church

Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch: "both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and Philip baptized him... they came up out of the water." (Acts 8:36-39). Immersion was the clear, primary form practiced.

⚡ Identification: Dead, Buried, and Risen (Romans 6:1-11)

The main passage that explains baptism is Romans 6. In baptism, we are identified with Jesus Christ in His three great saving acts:

⬇️ Into the Water: DEATH

Going down into the water says we have died to sin. We make a complete break with the past. Like a man 'dead to the world' when engrossed in a newspaper, we are closed to sin's enticements.

🕳️ Under the Water: BURIAL

Being lowered beneath the water represents our old life being buried, put out of sight. The baptistery is a picture of an open grave. We cannot return to our old life. (Romans 6:4)

⬆️ Out of the Water: RESURRECTION

Being raised up represents our resurrection to a new life—Christ's life. "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." (Galatians 2:20). We walk in newness of life.

🌊 Old Testament Shadow: The Red Sea

In 1 Cor 10:1-11, Paul explains that passing through the Red Sea was a type of baptism. It broke Egypt's domination, just as Christ breaks Satan's. Once they passed through, the waters closed behind them—there was no turning back.

🔥 Testing, Trials, & Growth

Our Christian walk will not be easy; we will face trials. James says testing develops perseverance. Trials are not God's displeasure, but His love to refine our faith and character. (James 1:2-4, Hebrews 12:7-11)

📋 For Those Being Baptized

Baptism is a solemn pledge, a step of total dedication. Here are the practical arrangements to make:

  • 💬 Speak with Leadership: Express your desire to the minister or an elder. They will discuss arrangements and explain anything you do not understand.
  • 👪 Parental Consent: If you are under age, you must get your parents' permission. A Christian from the church will gladly call and speak with them if you have difficulties.
  • ✉️ Invite Loved Ones: Invite family, relatives, and friends. It is an opportunity to show them how much Christ means to you; they may be touched to believe as well.
  • 📍 Choose a Location: Consider where the baptism is to take place—some in church buildings, others in a river or the sea for a wider public witness.
  • 👕 Suitable Clothing: Wear suitable, modest clothing that will not become see-through or heavy when wet. The minister will advise you.
  • 🧴 Bring a Support Friend: Ask a close friend to sit with you to support you during the service and hand you a towel as you leave the water.

⛪ For Those Conducting the Baptism

Ministers, elders, and leaders should maintain the decency and spiritual dignity of the ordinance:

  • 🧑‍🏫 Clear Walkthrough: Explain practical details beforehand (how to stand, how you will hold them, entering/leaving the water). This reduces anxiety.
  • 🚰 Water Levels: Ensure the maximum amount of water is in the baptistery to make the physical immersion safe and smooth.
  • 👥 Two-Person Assistance: Consider having two leaders conduct the immersion for security, especially for heavy candidates or in a service with many people.
  • 🧘 Slow and Gentle: Baptize slowly and gently. Hurrying sends water flying, focusing people's minds on the 'splash' rather than the beauty of the symbol.
  • ☕ Hospitality: Provide refreshments at the end. Many newcomers attend baptisms; this creates a relaxed space to connect.
  • 🛡️ Pray for Protection: Urge the church to pray for the newly baptized in the following week. They are special targets for spiritual attacks. (Matthew 3:16-4:11)
